In Bowing Green Kentucky and Warren and surrounding counties the average yearly rainfall is 11.16 inches. While this may seem high, we have already received over 18 inches as of today, March 21st.  With the excessive amount of rain in a relatively short period of time the concern for microbial  growth increases substantially especially in areas  that are not climate controlled, have high humidity levels,  as well as areas with little to no ventilation. Typically this would be a basement and/or crawlspace.

Preventing the water intrusion is the best way to prevent mold spores from colonizing but with large rain totals in short time periods water tends to not only stay on the ground surface longer, it also finds a way to penetrate building materials including concrete foundations.  Once this occurs water mitigation is the most important next step to trying to prevent significant unwanted damage. Mold growth is a symptom of moisture intrusion so it is essential to first identify, correct, and manage the source of moisture prior to any remediation actions.

Although mold can start to colonize within hours, it takes time for some molds to develop to the point where it can be detected by sight or smell. So… what should you do? Perform routine checks in areas of your home that are not typically occupied, especially lower levels and crawlspaces. Check for any signs of staining from water damage as well as discoloration on building materials. If you do notice any unusual situations, you may need to contact a reputable contractor to inspect the area, identify the source, and create a plan to eliminate the dangers associated with it.

While there a no State Mold Remediation Laws in place currently,  there are regulations for companies who perform such work.  When choosing a company to address the issues there a certain criteria you should look for.

  1. IICRC ( Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification)
  2. Training including safety measures for occupants and employees
  3. Education and Experience

So, what’s the Big Deal? Nothing if you address the source, correct the cause of the water damage, and then properly remediate the resulting damage and create a healthy environment.
